Aaah, the ever unpredictable British weather- it's good to know that we can count on you to never play by the rules! With the last week or so being punctuated by sunshine and showers (with the odd hail storm thrown in for good measure!), the transition from season to season is proving something of a sartorial minefield. As I type this, I'm bundled up in a jumper and woolly socks, but with temperatures set to soar over the weekend, I'm looking forward to digging out some sunny style staples- and a reverting to a recent combination too:

Jacket- Topshop
Tee- Whistles (c/o Westfield London)
Jeans- Reiss 1971
Shoes- Gap
This jacket from Topshop has been lurking in the back of my wardrobe for an absolute eternity, and is a piece which I've struggled to style ever since I picked it up during a post Saturday-job splurge in the sale a good three years or so ago. Nothing like a 50% discount to seduce you into spur of the moment payday purchase eh?! Anyway, I'd hidden it away after getting it home and realising that if I wore it I'd be treading a seriously fine line between looking cool and looking like I belonged in an episode of Miami Vice. Fast forward a few years, and after rediscovering it in the recesses of my wardrobe, we've given things a second chance. I don't know if I'm loving it more the second time around because my style has evolved a little bit since I bought it, or because as I've gotten a bit older I've become less concerned with how things look- perhaps it's a bit of both! Anyway, this is definitely a piece which I'm sure is well on the way to becoming a summer staple, and here I teamed it with another new favourite in the shape of this 'Je t'adore' tee from Whistles. We all know that I can't resist a French slogan, and when I spied this tee in Westfield with Elodie a few weeks ago, I swiftly snapped it up. It's already proven to be a real go to basic and is perfect for layering with other pieces in this tricky transitional weather. Finally, these jeans were another sale purchase from Reiss last year (can you sense a theme here?!!) and I've fallen back in love with them over the last few weeks- another example of the perfect wardrobe essential.
What are your favourite basic pieces?

Over the last few months or so, I've developed something of an obsession with the humble sweatshirt. An innocent foray into heretofore uncharted wardrobe territory which all began with a simple purchase from Whistles has now spiralled a little out of control. Another Whistles number has recently been added to my collection (it seems I can't resist a French slogan!) and I'm already contemplating a few future purchases in the same vain. The sweatshirt is pretty much the perfect embodiment of the Sports Luxe phenomena, and is also a really easy piece to wear- whether it be with jeans, more formal trousers or a skirt for a masculine/feminine twist. The sweatshirt is also the perfect transitional addition to any wardrobe, hovering nicely just between the winter woolly and the summer blouse as an autumn staple, and I've got my eyes firmly fixed on a few favourites to see me through the coming months:

Quilted Sweater, £25.99, Zara/C'est La Vie Sweater, £65, Whistles (via John Lewis)/ You Me Oui Jersey Sweatshirt, £57, Zoe Karseen at The Outnet/Rose Silver Grey Quilted Sweatshirt, £69, Reiss.
This quilted sweater from Zara's TRF range is something which has been on my wishlist for a wee while now as it's a real versatile classic in the making. The quilted detail adds a lovely little premium touch, and the contrasting monochrome makes the perfect wardrobe staple- I can just picture it teamed with the perfect pair of jeans and a statement necklace, can't you? I couldn't round up my pick of the best sweats in the shops at the moment without including the aforementioned recent purchase from Whistles- and anything which simultaneously improves your languages skills, taps into a key new season trend AND sounds out one of the best songs of the 1990s (thank you, B*Witched!) is a definite winner in my books. Zoe Karseen's instantly recognisable designs are some of the most coveted around at the moment, and this jersey sweatshirt from The Outnet is a real steal which would make the perfect addition to any new season wardrobe (plus it really reminds me of Love Hearts and any clothing that has connotations of sweets can be no bad thing, eh?!) Finally, this silver grey sweater from Reiss is another understated basic which lends itself really wonderfully to tapping into a more androgynous aesthetic- a real go to on days where it's tricky to know what to wear because of the weather, or for when you're drawn towards a more pared down, casual look.
Have you picked up any sweatshirts for the new season?

Since I started my first proper post-university job towards the end of last year, I've noticed a distinct shift in my spending habits. Whereas before I used to think nothing of spending my Saturday girl wages on throwaway purchases (as well as the inevitable lunch break pick me up from Boots!), now that I'm earning a relatively tidy, regular sum of money each month, I'm increasingly reluctant to fritter it away on pieces which I know I'll get bored of and which won't hold up all that well over time. Don't get me wrong, I love a bargain as much as the next person, but now I'm definitely leaning towards picking up more investment pieces which I know will last and will prove versatile enough to be great value for money. Wardrobe, meet the latest Reiss 1971 collection:

The 1971 range from Reiss is something which has been on my radar for a little while, but it was only after paying a visit to their Westfield Stratford City store last weekend that I got a chance to see the SS13 offering for myself. Suffice it to say it was love at first sight and I've now got a wishlist as long as my arm of new favourite pieces. The Catalina top is my idea of a perfect summer staple- lightweight, easy to wear and a beautiful sorbet shade, with the laser cutout detailing adding a real premium edge. The Audrey shirt is a definitive basic, and is something which could be styled in so many different ways- whether for a relaxed spring look, a more formal context or layered under some knitwear (seeing as it's still bitterly cold outside!) One of my standout pieces from the range is without a doubt the Maya biker jacket- after seeing it firsthand last weekend it's definitely a piece which I'm resolved to save up for. Butter soft leather, the perfect shape and in a beautiful mint green, it's far and away one of my top picks for this season. Finally, you all know about my seemingly never ending quest for the perfect pair of jeans, and I think this pair may be just what I'm looking for. Super skinny and with a cropped fit, they're perfect for evoking a vintage inspired look for the summer- and I'm pretty sure I'll be snapping them up sooner rather than later!
Have you noticed a change in your spending habits recently? And what do you think of the latest 1971 collection from Reiss?
