I think it's fair to say that this time last year not many people had heard of Lana Del Rey. Fast forward twelve months, and Lana's distinctive voice, movie star features and Americana inspired style have catapulted her into the public consciousness, and with a summer schedule choc full of festival appearances, Lana fever shows no sign of abating anytime soon. As well as having one of the most distinctive recording voices I've heard in a long time, she's also a rapidly rising fashion icon, with a Vogue cover under her belt and a Mulberry bag named after her, despite having only been in the public eye for a matter of months. Lana calls herself the 'gangster Nancy Sinatra', and there's something undeniably classic about the way her looks are put together. Having said that, her approach to fashion is also fun, quirky and fresh, proving that there's much more to a modern music star than just selling albums:

I love this look at it centres around all things floral! There's something quite retro about Lana's styling, and I've tried to capture this as much as possible in this outfit. The ankle grazer trousers I've picked from River Island evoke a real 50s feel, and the vibrant shirt from Warehouse is perfect for channelling Lana's classic Americana look. Statement accessories come in the shape of the gorgeous hair clip from ASOS and beautiful bracelet from Oasis, both fitting in with the floral theme. I adore the patent leather shoes from Zara, and think they add an androgynous touch which keeps the look from being too cutesy. Finally, this bag from New Look is one of my favourite recent discoveries- and it's not a million miles away from the Mulberry Del Rey, is it?

22.04.2012- Sunday Style Spotlight #17 : Lana Del Rey

The subject of this edition of Sunday Style Spotlight seems like the dream match for this feature, given that she shares her name with the day of the week which the post falls on! Over the last year or so, I've been admiring Sunday Girl's style from a distance, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to get a bit more familiar with her kooky yet quintessentially English take on fashion. Real name Jade Williams, Sunday girl is a singer, model and musician who is a regular fixture in many a London Fashion Week front row. The way in which she effortlessly fuses high street staples with high end designer pieces has made her the subject of countless street style snaps, and served to confirm her status as an up-and-coming style icon...

This look is all about capturing Sunday Girl's effortless bohemian approach, and I think it's a perfect outfit for spring. I adore the printed dress from Zara, and paired with the vintage belt from Rokit it's the perfect basis for channelling a relaxed, festival feel. The structured bag from Warehouse is something which I've been keeping an eye out for ages and I couldn't resist including it here as it's an ideal (and slightly more affordable!) alternative to Mulberry. These gorgeous moccasins from Topshop keep things co-ordinated, and I think they add a real retro feel to the outfit, as do the oversized sunglasses and simple vintage ring. This is a look I'll definitely be recreating as the warmer weather approaches!

There's nothing like an Oscars red carpet appearance to boost your style profile, and in the midst of the awards mania which unfolded last Sunday, Lily Collins came up trumps. Although absent from the ceremony itself, she made a standout entrance at Vanity Fair's post awards party, wearing an amazing Monique Lhuillier gown which has since topped many a best-dressed poll. You might recognise Lily from supporting roles in films such at The Blind Side and Abduction, and this year she makes her first leading appearance in Mirror, Mirror. She has also written for magazines including Teen Vogue, ELLE Girl and Seventeen, all at the age of 22! Her style is elegant, young and fun, and, if her appearance at the Vanity Fair party is anything to go by, this year looks set to be the year that her style goes stellar:

This look was inspired by the outfit which Lily wore to Chanel's pre-Oscars party, focusing on the contrast between some really feminine pieces and the much tougher jacket. This is the kind of look I love as I think it's a really modern way of incorporating quite an an androgynous piece, wearing it alongside garments which you maybe wouldn't think of combining it with ordinarily. I've been wearing my faux-leather jacket from Zara to death since I bought it towards the end of last summer, and this style from H&M is really similar and a fantastic price. I love this swing shirt from River Island, and paired with this gorgeous midi skirt from New Look, it creates a really cute basis for the look. Perfectly co-ordinated with these amazingly priced ballet pumps from H&M and simple clutch bag from Miss Selfridge, you've got an outfit which is really girly but with a touch of rebel style.

I've been an admirer of Diana Vickers' style since she first came to our attention on The X Factor back in 2008 (back when the wardrobe team on that show knew what they were doing!), and have been really interested to see how her style has evolved over the last few years. It is quite tricky to pinpoint her signature style as she's something of a fashion chameleon and seems to really enjoy experimenting, but vintage pieces, staples from British brands (such as Mulberry) and little boho touches all combine to create a look which feels really accessible. Diana's love of fashion has also seen her collaborate with very.co.uk, for whom she has created her Dee V clothing range- heavily influenced by her love of all things vintage and her own personal style:

This look is really influenced by the 60s and Diana's Bardot-esque style. The lightweight coat from her very.co.uk range is really practical, and I love the vintage inspired shape. This dress from Aubin and Wills is adorable, and I love the burnt orange colour- the peter pan collar is also the perfect little nod to the 60s. I've teamed these loafers from River Island with the ankle socks just to keep the look quite soft and youthful, and the bracelet from Rokit is the perfect accessory to tie the whole look together. Finally, this satchel from Warehouse is an instant classic, and again captures a retro feel without looking too dated.

Whilst this Style Spotlight may seem a little unorthodox (given that it's the first post which has focused on a character from a film rather than on an actress), it seems more than fitting given that 20s inspired fashion is a standout trend for the coming season, and when considering the mass acclaim surrounding The Artist- which this week picked up ten Oscar nominations. So, with this in mind, I give you a timely tribute to the signature look of the film's leading lady, Peppy Miller:

Peppy, played by the beautiful Bérénice Bejo, is an aspiring actress who finds herself propelled into the spotlight after a chance encounter with the famous silent film star, George Valentin. Mark Bridges, costume designer for The Artist has perfectly captured the glamour of the late 20s and early 30s throughout the film, and this classic look is surprisingly easy to replicate- as long as you keep things simple. I centred this outfit around this gorgeous drop-waist dress from Warehouse, as the shape is perfect for recreating the style of the era and the colour gives the outfit a really vibrant, youthful feel- keeping it from feeling too dated. One of Peppy's signature accessories is the cloche hat, and this beige design from River Island is a wonderfully subtle nod to this- I love the pastel ribbon detail too. For women, the fashions of the 20s also meant liberation- trousers, biker boots and brogues all became practical staples for those who could afford them, so these River Island flats are the perfect homage to this new found fashion freedom. This swing coat from John Lewis ties the whole look together perfectly, and is a classically glamorous piece which I'm sure Peppy herself would more than approve of. Finally, the jewellery seemed like the perfect finishing touch to such a timeless look, and each piece co-ordinates perfectly with the rest of the outfit.

Have you been inspired by The Artist? What do you think of this look? And which film characters are your style icons?

Whilst I can't pretend that I completely understand The Hills or its metropolitan sister show The City (I blame being the only child of the MTV generation who has never had access to the channel!), the shows are responsible for the advent of one women fashion phenomena Whitney Port, Lauren Conrad and Olivia Palermo. Of all three, Olivia is the one I'm most familiar with, simply because she seems to pop up everywhere- especially during fashion week. I've started to really admire her style- cool, classic city dressing at its best, all of course topped off with that immaculately groomed (and rather enviable) hairstyle. Her signature look is modern, clean and quite fashion forward- she's not afraid to experiment with bold accessories and trend driven looks. In essence, her style is all about dressing up, co-ordination and mixing high end with high street:

This outfit is essentially a take on Olivia's more androgynous outfits, but I think each piece could be styled in a variety of ways as they are all so versatile. I adore this ruffle blouse from Diana Vickers' latest collection for very.co.uk, and the frilled details add a lovely feminine element to a look which could be quite harsh otherwise. These slim leg trousers from River Island are a wardrobe classic if ever I saw one- a simple, go to item which could be paired with anything. We all know Olivia's a big fan of Topshop, so these studded Vectra slippers seemed an obviously fashion-forward choice when attempting to recreate her look. Co-ordination is also key, so I included this metallic shopper from Zara (a steal at £19.99!) and continued the metallic detailing with this ASOS ring duo as a finishing touch.

What do you like of Olivia Palermo's style? Are you a fan?

I've posted before about my love of Keira Knightley's style, and I think she's one of a select few modern film stars who embodies a really vintage inspired elegance on the red carpet. As the face of Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance, she can take her pick from Karl Lagerfeld's creations, but the thing I really admire about Keira is her support for upcoming British designers- she wore Erdem back in 2007 and sported a stunning Mary Katrantzou dress at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year. Her street style is relaxed, cool and comfortable, and her model-like proportions are perfect for showcasing stunning couture pieces on the red carpet:

This look was inspired by the autumnal Erdem printed dress which Keira wore to the Olivier awards in 2010, and by a look she put together back in 2008. I love the floral pattern on this blouse from Miss Selfridge, and the black bow detail ensures it co-ordinates perfectly with this Topshop skirt. These boots from Zara really remind me of the Isabel Marant Dickers, and I think they toughen the outfit up perfectly. This satchel from ASOS also matches the blouse beautifully, and the gold buckles make it look like a designer piece. Finally, this ring from Cheap Frills is the perfect statement accessory to finish the look off.

What do you think of Keira Knightley's style? Are you a fan?

Since the age of about 11 (when I became obsessed with all things Lord of the Rings!), I've really admired Liv Tyler's style. Her attitude to fashion is relaxed, classic and easy-going, capturing an attitude which is quintessentially New York. As someone who is a little bit on the tall side, I also look to Liv (who is 5' 10") for inspiration- I love the way she returns to trusty staple items and never picks up a trend just for the sake of it. She's perfected the accessible wardrobe- cute patterned dresses teamed with beautifully cut blazers, understated accessories and timeless designer pieces all combine to create a series of signature looks which are effortlessly stylish:

This look is cool and uncomplicated, featuring items which are really versatile and classic. This beautiful pansy print dress from Warehouse is a dead ringer for the Thakoon design which Liv wore to the New York premiere of her film Super, and it's a piece that would look amazing dressed up or down. This blazer from River Island has a really luxe feel thanks to the leather effect lapels, and I think it's a staple item which you could wear again and again. These limited edition heels from New Look are stunning, and co-ordinate perfectly with the oversized clutch bag from Miss Selfridge- I love the gold accents. Finally, there are few things more classic than a pop of red lipstick, and this shade from Topshop is a brilliantly bold finishing touch.

What do you think of Liv Tyler's style? And who is your fashion icon?
